What I learned in the Bermuda Triangle

Updated: Apr 11, 2018

Bermuda is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world. Bermuda is a composed of 150 islands that stretch over 21 square miles. I took a trip there back in 2015 and one of the most interesting things about Bermuda I learned was their culture.

Bermuda is very family oriented. What I found most intriguing is their marriage laws.

Bermuda has a very strict law as it relates to marriage and immigration. If you marry a Bermudian and divorce before 10 years, if you have had no children you must be immediately deported back to your country. However, if you remain married over the 10 year mark, you may remain in the country even if your marriage produced no children.

Another rule I found interesting is the rights to own property. You may only buy property in Bermuda if you are native born to the country. In fact many celebrities including Oprah have been denied access to purchase property due to the strict citizenship law. Which is just as well, because as of 2016 the median home price was 1.1 Million US dollars. Because Bermuda is such a small island they have very specific rules about car ownership. Each household is only allowed 1 car, unless there is a physician in the home, in which case 2 cars are allowed. Most people commute via motor bikes.

The average gas price in Bermuda is close to 8.00 per gallon. The gas price is so expensive because like most items on the island it is imported. According to my tour guide, most people take 1-2 trips per year to New York and stockpile toiletry items like soap, and underwear as it is cheaper to do this, than purchase things on the island.

Another big influence in Bermudian culture is religion. Christianity is the main religion of the island. Bermuda has astounding number of churches on their small island. In fact there is a church located every 500 meters.

Hamilton, Burmuda

Bermuda has so many things to see, however if I had to suggest one tourist attraction, I would hands down pick the Crystal Caves. They are located in Hamilton. The Crystal Caves are underground caves that have the most beautiful Crystal formations. It was discovered in 1905 by two young boys who were playing cricket. They accidently lost their ball down a hole in a area near their home. When they told their father what happened, they returned to the spot and he lowered his son down the hole with just a rope and a bicycle lamp and the rest is history. The Wilkerson family soon opened up the caves for the public to see. In fact one of the first visitors was Mark Twain. Many people don’t realize this but the famous TV show “Fraggle Rock” was inspired by the crystal caves as the co creator Michael Frith is a native Bermudian. Bermuda is a beautiful country steeped in tradition and with amazing tourist attractions. It's a must see location.
